Driving license
If you want to drive a vehicle or a motorcycle in Thailand for vacation, leisure, or daily life, you may receive a Thai driving license from the Department of Land Transport anywhere in Thailand if you meet the following requirements:
-
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- In rare instances, a tourist visa may be accepted instead of a valid non-immigrant visa.
- In excellent physical and mental health
Obtaining a Thai driver’s license is a simple process. It simply takes a day, costs a few hundred baht, and is valid in ten ASEAN nations.

BY PROFESSION
Even though foreigners can obtain a Thai driver’s license, they are not permitted to operate as motor vehicle drivers, including moving products and passengers by road (i.e. food or package delivery, ridesharing, passenger van or bus, etc.) Furthermore, even if they obtain a professional license in their home countries, foreigners are not permitted to work as tram drivers transporting goods and passengers by water or air, as well as driving a domestic non-mechanically propelled carrier except international aircraft or driving a forklift equipped with lifting or moving equipment.
All drivers must pass a driving test and receive a provisional license. After holding the licence for at least two years, the motorist can convert it into a full public or private licence of their choice. They can also apply for heavy goods or passenger vehicle licenses.
Drivers who have had their license revoked earlier, typically by a court order, must additionally get a probationary license.
The Department of Land Transport is enacting a new regulation in response to the emergence of extremely powerful and heavy motorbikes. Drivers who wish to drive a motorbike with a power surpassing 45 kW or an engine greater than 400 cc will need an extra license as well as more severe training once the legislation goes into effect. This extra license is no longer accessible as of September 7, 2022.

Once the probationary licence has been held for 2 years, the holder may apply for the private licence of the same vehicle type.[n 1] This licence is valid for five years. If the licence is due to expire before the next birthdate, the actual expiry date will be amended to be the next birthdate.
Public (or Taxicab) Licence
Validity (years):
Vehicle Type: Car, Tricycle, Motorcycle Tricycle Motorcycle
Like a private licence, a public licence may be obtained by anyone who wants to drive a taxicab. This licence is valid for three years. The condition on expiry date as a private licence still applies.
