What are the different types of Visa?

In Thailand there are 8 major visa types issued under the Immigration Act. Each category is restricted to the purpose for which the visa has been issued, and foreigners are required to strictly follow the rules governing each visa category. Change of address or status should be relayed to local police within 24 hours.

    • Transit Visa “TS”– Applicable to foreigners entering Thailand with an intention to travel on to another country.
    • Tourist Visa “TR” – Applicable to foreigners visiting Thailand for sight-seeing purposes only.
    • Non-Immigrant Visa – Applicable to foreigners entering Thailand on a temporary basis for a particular purpose
    • Diplomatic Visa “D”– Applicable to foreigners who enter the Kingdom on a diplomatic or consular mission or for the performance of duties with international organizations.
    • Official Visa “F”– For foreigners who will perform official duties involving the Thai government.
    • Immigrant Visa (Permanent Residence) – Applicable to those foreigners entering Thailand for permanent residence purposes.
    • Non-Quota Immigrant Visa – Applicable to permanent residents wishing to leave Thailand and return within a year.

Courtesy Visa – Applicable to those diplomatic and/or official passport holders who enter the Kingdom for purposes other than official duties and to those ordinary passport holders who enter the Kingdom in response to an official Thai request.

Is it feasible to extend your stay?

Depending on your nationality, a transit visa might be extended for 7 to 10 days. Meanwhile, depending on your country, a tourist visa can be renewed for a maximum of 7 days or 60 days (30 days at a time). Such extensions are subject to a government processing cost of Baht 1,900.

You must also submit the following documents for the application:

      • Passport or travel document
      • One ID photo (2 inches square)
      • Statement of reasons for requesting an extension

Non-immigrant visa categories B or B-A are typically extended for a period of no more than 1 year from the date of arrival,

      • with the exception of IM, which shall not exceed 2 years, and
      • IB, which is generally 2 to 3 years depending on the BOI’s recommendation and the size of the investment.

Non-immigrant visa extensions need a government charge of Baht 1,900 and the production of supporting corporation documentation.

    Overstaying

When you arrive in Thailand, the length of your stay will be printed on your passport.

Passport and visa control is strictly enforced in Thailand, and offenders face harsh penalties. Overstaying is punishable by a fine of Baht 500 each day after the expiration date of the permissible duration of stay, up to a maximum of Baht 20,000

This fine can be paid at the Immigration Division or at the airport before you leave. If you are unable to pay the overstay fine, you will be held at the Immigration Detention Center.

    Permit for Re-Entry

Foreigners who intend to leave Thailand but return before the visa’s expiry date without having to apply for a new visa must apply for a re-entry permission prior to departure.

A re-entry permit permits you to return to Thailand and utilise the remaining time on your visa. If no re-entry permission is obtained, the visa will be immediately terminated, even if it has not expired.

A re-entry permit may be issued at Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok), Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, and Sukhothai international airports, as well as other authorized immigration checkpoints around Thailand, in addition to Immigration offices.

    Official cost of re-entry

        • A single re-entry costs Baht 1,000, whereas several re-entries cost Baht 3,800.  If you plan on leaving Thailand regularly, you should apply for a multiple-entry visa.
        • If you leave Thailand before your visa expires and wish to return but lack a re-entry permission, you must apply for a new visa at a Thai Embassy or Consulate overseas. Exits are only legal at specified immigration checkpoints.

Crossing borders is deemed an exit for immigration reasons, regardless of whether the exit point is regulated, and returning to Thailand following such travels requires required visas or re-entry permits.
